8 Signs Protein Deficiency

Proteins are essential for our bodies in order for them to function properly, as they help provide energy, heal our body and keep our stomach satisfied. They are composed of long-chain amino acids which are building blocks of muscles. However, in the case of lack of protein, our body will send us several signals that we all need to look out for:

1-Muscle and joint pain

Pain and weakness in the muscles or joints is a sign that our body is breaking own to supplement calories instead of protein.

2-Anxiety and moodiness

Proteins play a huge part in the creation of serotonin and dopamine, two hormones which regulate our mood and are responsible for happiness.

3-Thinning hair

Our hairs are made mostly out of proteins, which is why if we don’t consume enough our hair starts thinning.

4-Weak nails and skin

Lacking proteins will cause weak skin and nails, as well as other skin conditions.

5-Swollen legs

Fluid retention is another common symptom of lack of protein, and when it occurs, our legs and feet get swollen as proteins help hold salt and water in the blood vessels, and without them, the water builds up in the surrounding tissues.

6-You get sick constantly

Proteins are essential to build all the compounds in our immune system, so without them, our immunity is weakened.

7-Difficulty sleeping

Serotonin deficiency is one of the most common causes for insomnia.

8-Headache

Lacking proteins is one of the more famous causes of anemia and low blood sugar levels, which as a result causes headaches.
